The world changed here
Did you know Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest state park in the United States? It was established in 1885 and envisioned in part by Frederick Law Olmstead, the renowned landscape architect behind New York’s Central Park, the U.S. Capitol, and the Biltmore Estate.
We enjoyed learning more about how Niagara Falls became a powerhouse for energy and generating electricity while also providing a beauty to behold. Over a weekend trip, we walked around, taking it all in with Mitzi. The fact that we can share our passion for travel and adventure with our dog means the world to us. The admiration we see from others gives us a sense of hope, and spreading cheer is a good thing!

Where to stay
Niagara Falls, New York, is located 20 miles north of Buffalo and less than 90 minutes from Toronto. Just across the Rainbow Bridge is Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, so you might want to have your Passport handy to cross over. We enjoyed the central location of the Niagara Riverside Resort, BW Premier Collection by Best Western. The river views were calming at the start and end of the days of our trip. Just 5 minutes down the Niagara Falls Scenic Parkway from the hotel is Old Falls Street and Niagara Falls State Park.

What to see
- You absolutely must visit the oldest state park in the United States. It is highly accessible, and many paths are dog-friendly.
- Be sure to take the Scenic Trolley around to get a feel for the area around the American Falls and near the Horseshoe Falls.
- Stop by the Welcome Center, where you’ll find Tastes of Niagara for a quick bite after exploring.
- The tour starts with a video introducing the history of Niagara Falls, and reminds us of the power that is harnessed from the water flowing over them.
- Then take an elevator ride down into the tunnel, where you’ll don a poncho. Then walk out to observation decks, allowing you to safely get close to both American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls.
- This thrill was incredible to experience. There is no cave anymore, but the name stuck, and you can imagine the cave here is you. You’re directly between the water and the rock!
- A mainstay for the last 150 years, Maid of the Mist now offers an all-electric fleet of boats to get you up close and personal to all three of the falls!
- When you board, you can choose between two levels of the boat and enjoy the ride. Although you’ll receive a poncho to help keep you dry, you will still get wet!
- Take pictures and videos, as this is such an exhilarating way to enjoy seeing Niagara Falls, especially the Horseshoe Falls, without crossing into Canada.

Where to eat + drink
- Start your day or get a midday pick-me-up.
- Their daily roasts and selection of flavored coffees line shelves around the shop. Ask their friendly baristas if you have any questions.
- Indoor and outdoor seating (dog-friendly patio) are perfect for enjoying the charm of an old house in Lewiston, New York. Mitzi especially enjoyed their generous pup cup!
- We had to check out the food scene on Elmwood in nearby Buffalo, and we are happy to recommend this restaurant.
- The flavors of their shishito peppers and karaage chicken paired perfectly with ramen for a hearty dinner.
- Their back patio is an urban oasis that is also dog-friendly.
- It is hard to pick just one place to stop on the Niagara Wine Trail. Bella Rose Winery is located in Lewiston, New York, and has a quaint setting on a hillside just outside town.
- The patio and outdoor seating areas are dog-friendly, and live music may be available on weekends.
- Our favorite of their wines is the Semi-Dry Riesling, but do a flight and try 5 samples that way. They also have a food menu and some beers on tap!
- Located on the Niagara River in Lewiston, Griffon offers stunning views and generous portions.
- Their menu is award-winning, and with starters like the Mexican Street Corn dip, it’s no wonder!
- The servers and staff are accommodating, and the patio is dog-friendly.
- Located in the Village of Youngstown, we had to stop here. They specialize in handmade dog treats and free pup cups while serving Perry’s Ice Cream.
- Leashed dogs are welcome to come inside the shop as well.
- Enjoy a cone or cup with your pup as you sit on the bench outside or stroll down Main Street to take in the beautiful downtown.
Sorry Mitzi, wine is for adults only

Why do we travel?
We love adventure together. Learning is also a pillar for us, and it’s always so interesting to glean a new perspective when visiting places and taking it all in. Regardless of the weather, we find activities to do and positivity within the moment. We reflect on these experiences and find inspiration in design specific to each place, how it’s unique and similar to others, and how to bring it into our home.
The value we find in staying with Best Western Hotels and Resorts allows us to get out more because we’re not breaking the bank on accommodations alone. The locations are convenient, the beds are comfortable, and the rooms are always clean. In a nutshell, we don’t travel just for the hotel room. We travel for the memories and quality time as a family.
