Peak Fall Colors

Road trips from Cleveland in the fall are incredible, as you’re sure to see the leaves turning from green to golden yellow. The later in October you go, the oranges and reds join into the mix for one of the most impressive sights you will ever see, especially when crossing into neighboring states from the Ohio Turnpike.

But, more importantly, did you know there is a mountain in the Midwest? Come with us to Crystal Mountain in Michigan, just 30 minutes from one of our favorite places in the country, Traverse City! We return to Northwest Michigan yearly, at least once, because it is so special. The people are always so welcoming, and the landscape feels coastal, with the vibes only the Midwest can offer. That, of course, includes a place that can be enjoyed in each of the four seasons.

Where to stay

Did we mention Crystal Mountain? Truly a year-round destination, Crystal Mountain is a resort that offers golf, skiing, hiking, a luxurious spa, and numerous restaurants surrounded by various accommodations. Choose from hotel rooms, studios, mountainside townhouses, cottages, and bungalows. Upon arriving, you’re greeted by a winding drive that brings you to a magical retreat.

Fall colors here were on full display for us in early October, but we’re already dreaming about returning in the winter and summer with our future children someday. This is the life we would love to share with them, along with friends and family.

What to see

Frankfort North Breakwater Lighthouse on Lake Michigan

Frankfort North Breakwater Lighthouse

Walk along the pier, just off the public beach in downtown Frankfort, to appreciate the historical site in maritime heritage. Dating back to 1925, the lighthouse stands 70’ towering over Lake Michigan. Fundraising is underway for the community to restore the light to its glory. Learn more information and help preserve history here.

Point Betsie Lighthouse

Be sure to take the drive outside Frankfort to see Point Betsie. The lighthouse has been a part of the Lake Michigan coastline since 1858! Tours are available seasonally into October, and the grounds are rich with a world-class beach, museum, keeper’s residence, and fog signal building. To this day, Point Betsie is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the United States.

Coaster Alpine Slide

Crystal Mountain’s new coaster alpine slide is also the only one in Michigan! Take the Loki Lift to the top of the mountain, and release your inner child as you ride down your sled at speeds up to 35 mph! We enjoyed this thrill together as we tried to beat the other down first!

Chairlift Rides

Crystal Mountain will have you in awe as you take in a scenic ride up the mountainside on the chairlift. You’ll be able to imagine what the slopes look like, covered in snow, as you appreciate the fall colors. Walk around at the top and take pictures of the vistas as far as you can see. On the ride back down, you’ll get a full glimpse of the resort and all its amenities.

Michigan Legacy Art Park

The late sculptor David Barr was named Michigan Governor’s Artist Award in 1988. He declared his desire to create an art park during his acceptance speech. Crystal Mountain helped David reach this dream by leasing the land for the park for only $1 per year, and in 1995, this vision became a reality. Nearly thirty years later, the 51 pieces in the park reflect his work and other artists’ creations.

Where to eat + drink

Northwest Michigan never disappoints with its expansive culinary scene. Access to farm markets and the freshest ingredients helps propel restaurants and cafes in the region. Additionally, the microclimate provided by Lake Michigan, along with the inland lakes and bays, provides for the vast orchards of cherry trees (you are in the Cherry Capital of the World, after all) and apple trees. You can’t miss all the vineyards, with breweries and distilleries enjoying the landscape.

Birch & Maple

Venture into Frankfort for a brunch you won’t forget. Take in the views of Betsie Lake as you sip on Leelanau Coffee (hot and iced are available). We had no hesitation ordering the Chicken & Waffles, which was extra special with the bourbon maple toffee served with. We also shared the Breakfast Burrito stuffed with chorizo, black beans, fluffy scrambled eggs, and potatoes; the queso and green chili creme fraiche was the chef’s kiss on top!

Perks of Frankfort

As you explore, you might need a pick-me-up, and you can’t go wrong with any of the specialty coffee drinks (or tea, kombucha, and more) at Perks. One of Michigan’s favorite Fair Trade roasters, Higher Grounds, is brewed here. As you unwind in their eclectic cafe with rainbow seats around a communal table, take a seat. They even have a piano if you want to tickle the ivories.

Wild Tomato

Are you in the mood for a breakfast buffet with all the options? Wild Tomato has something for everyone, from cinnamon swirl French toast to smoked salmon, eggs benedict, oatmeal, fresh fruit, and pastries. The friendly servers will also bring you coffee, tea, and/or orange juice. Talk about a great way to start the day!

The Thistle

One of the most beautiful Scottish-style restaurants we’ve visited, The Thistle offers fine dining with a laid-back atmosphere at Crystal Mountain. We had dinner here, which started with incredible salads, followed by a pork tenderloin udon bowl on special and the Northwoods Fettuccini with chicken. The cocktails were delicious as well. Our server was attentive and friendly, offering bowls and extra serving spoons for sharing the dishes!

Five Shores Brewing

Craft beer and delicious food in a fun setting. Live music can be heard here, too. We both enjoyed the ShoresFest, Five Shores Brewing’s Märzen is a delicious version of an “Oktoberfest”. The naan flatbread and crunch wraps didn’t disappoint! Also, don’t miss the mural on the side of the historic Quonset building in downtown Beulah.

Stormcloud Brewing Company

Craving a Belgian ale while in Northern Michigan? The Stormcloud Brewing Company Pub in Frankfort has quite the selection on tap. We enjoyed the B. Sirius BBQ Smoked Brisket Nachos and Stormavore pizza with all the fixings. Don’t forget to order one of the gourmet popcorn options, too. The Honey & Sriracha slaps, as the kids say these days. Live music and a large outdoor seating area complete the experience.

Traverse City Whiskey Co.

We always enjoy touring distillery production facilities as we learn so much each time. This is the first time we learned bourbon can be made outside of Kentucky, as TC Whiskey Co. uses virgin American Oak barrels, which is the requirement for bourbon. It’s not just something that can be made in the South. The flavors are smooth, especially the American Cherry Edition, Bourbon infused with Traverse City Cherries!

Where to shop?

Downtown Frankfort must be added to your list for strolling the sidewalks for all you can imagine. We love the classic Main Street feel, complete with the Garden Theater, where you can catch independent films and other new releases, so be sure to check their show times! After you get a bite to eat or a warm drink to enjoy, it’s time to shop!

Betsie Bay Furniture

Specializing in American-made furniture, you can also find seasonal decor and locally produced artwork at Betsie Bay. We especially enjoyed their large canoe displayed on the wall! We’d return to this place someday with a cabin or cottage property to furnish!

The Vault

Pop into what is possibly the newest (and, dare we say, cutest) apothecary on Main Street, and you’ll be sure to find self-care items and eco-friendly products that are perfect for giving as gifts! We loved the restoration inside this historic bank building, including refinished hardwood and beautiful tile flooring. The staff are so friendly and will help you with any questions before sending you home with a reusable bag if you spend over $100!

The Bookstore

Yes, that’s it; The Bookstore is a place you must visit. Take in fantastic customer service and all the latest titles, along with hard-to-find books of past eras, at this independent bookseller. We appreciated the variety they offer, from regional-specific, cooking, design, and children’s!

Lynn & Perin Mercantile Co.

You cannot miss Frankfort’s Market on Main, where you can find items from Michigan to take home. We especially appreciated the cherry candy from Cherry Republic and The Cherry Hut. But don’t miss other favorites, like kitchen items and textiles from Geometry!

Mountain Market

We’d be remiss at Crystal Mountain if we didn’t mention the Mountain Market. You must stop in during your stay or visit. They offer groceries, dry goods items, wine, and beer. Be sure to check out their prepared foods and soups, too. This is a place you’ll be returning to again and again because they have it all!
