Smart Builder Upgrades

Working together will help you reach your goals
It’s hard to believe it has already been four years since we first turned the key to unlock the door of our Drees Homes build. We still remember the mix of excitement and fearing "decision fatigue" that comes with building a custom home. You’re analyzing every bit of the floor plan, thinking where extra lights and outlets should go, picking out finishes, and—most importantly—trying to decide which builder upgrades are actually worth the extra cost.
As we grow our family and make core memories within these walls, we’ve realized that a house isn’t just about the size or the siding color; it’s about how the space functions for your life. With spring in full bloom, we’ve been spending more time refreshing our home with a thorough cleaning and some new decor. This seasonal transition has made us reflect on the bones of our home.
If you’re currently in the building process or planning a major renovation, here are the five builder upgrades we made with Drees Homes that we would choose again in a heartbeat.

1. Kitchen Upgrades: Glass Stacked Cabinets
They say the kitchen is the heart of the home, but we think the cabinets are like the soul. We opted for glass-front stacked cabinets that reach all the way to the ceiling.
While standard cabinets are functional, the glass doors allow us to treat our kitchen like a gallery. We love rotating our seasonal decor here—right now, it’s filled with light stoneware and spring-themed glassware, some of which we even made at the Glass Asylum in Chagrin Falls, Ohio! It keeps the kitchen feeling open, airy, and upscale. Plus, it forces us to keep our mugs organized near our espresso and coffee machines!

2. The Feature Staircase
Never underestimate the power of a first impression. The staircase is often the first architectural element people see when they walk through the door. We chose to upgrade to a feature staircase with custom railings and hardwood treads with painted risers.
It acts as the backbone of the house, connecting our living spaces with a sense of flow and light. It’s not just a way to get from point A to point B; it’s a special design element that anchors the entire aesthetic of the home. If you want your builder home to feel like a custom architectural masterpiece, this is where we recommend you allocate a little more of your upgrades budget.

3. The Second Floor "Milk Bar"
We call it the “Milk Bar,” but you might call it a coffee station or a wine bar. Whatever the name, having a dedicated beverage center on the second floor is a luxury we didn't know we needed until we had it.
In the mornings, it means we can grab a cup of coffee without descending to the kitchen. In the evenings, it’s a convenient spot for water or a nightcap. But most importantly for us right now with a baby, we can make his bottles right outside our bedroom and across from the nursery! It’s one of those semi-custom options that Drees Homes is known for, and it adds a level of hospitality to the home that makes our daily routine feel just a bit more like we’re staying in a fine hotel.

4. The Outdoor Living Area Fireplace
In the Midwest, spring isn't always "warm," but it is beautiful. One of our absolute favorite upgrades was adding a fireplace to our outdoor living area.
During these transitional months, this space becomes our secondary office. There is nothing quite like working from home with the fire crackling, a light breeze blowing through, and the spring greenery starting to pop. It extends our "patio season" by at least two months on either side of summer. And we love styling the table for alfresco dining with a couple friends. When we’re not working, it’s the ultimate spot for an evening by the fire. We’re already dreaming of making s’mores here with our son someday! If you’re on the fence about outdoor upgrades, prioritize the outdoor living area fireplace—it’s a lifestyle game-changer that adds happiness.

5. The Finished Lower Level
Finally, let’s talk about the "retreat." Investing in a finished lower level was the smartest move we made for our family’s long-term growth.
This isn't just a "basement"—it’s an extension of our home where we can unwind after a long work week. Whether it’s a movie night, a workout in the home gym, a place for the kids to play, or a quiet spot to host guests with an extra bedroom and full bathroom, along with our speakeasy-style wet bar, the extra livable square footage is vital as our family grows. Our realtor advised us when we were building that finishing this area now will never be less expensive, so do it with the builder. If you can manage it, do it. It’s the ultimate "flex space" that adapts to whatever stage of life we are in.

Bringing the Trends Home
While the "bones" of our home indeed came from the team at Drees Homes, the "soul" comes from how we style it. This season, we’ve been obsessed with adding pops of pastels and spring blooms in every room.
If you're looking to refresh your own space—whether you've been in your home for four years like us or you're just moving in—now is the time to add something as simple as a new floral arrangement or a faux tree. Set the table, admire your table scape, and dream of your next gathering. Our home is where our story continues, and thanks to Drees Homes for being part of this incredible journey!
